ESPNs Jesse Palmer And Joey Galloway Praise BYU; Players And Coaches Receive National Accolades

BYU has received a lot of attention since taking down then-No. 6 Wisconsin, 24-21, on the road at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Cougars were trending on social media, were the top story on SportsCenter and national radio shows after pulling arguably the biggest upset of the college football season so far this year.

ESPN analysts Jesse Palmer and Joey Galloway chimmed in and had some high praise for the Cougars too, who snapped Wisconsin’s 41-game non-conference home winning streak.

National Accolades

The awards just keeps coming in. Following a historic victory over the Badgers, BYU players and coaches have been awarded a number of accolades for their performance this past week.

First, BYU was named the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week by the Football Writers Association of America as well as the NCAA’s Team of the Week after the Cougars claimed their first win over a top-10 team in a true road game since 1984.

Second, senior running back Squally Canada received the Independent Offensive Player of the Week honors after rushing for a game-high 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Canada had his biggest runs of the season as the 5-foot-11, 210 pound back ripped off runs of 46 and 44 yards.

For the game, Canada finished averaging 10.7 yards per carry compared to just 4.5 yards per carry for Jonathan Taylor, who came into the season as one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy.

Third, BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes was named the Athlon Sports Coordinator of the Week. Grimes, kept Wisconsin’s defense guessing the entire day as the Cougars bounced back from a home loss to California in the season opener two weeks ago.

Fourth, senior linebacker Sione Takitaki had a game to remember as the 6-foot-2, 230 pound player was named the College Sports Madness National Player of the Week. Takitaki had a career-high 13 tackles, including eight solo to go along with one sack.

And for the cherry on top, the Cougars (2-1) jumped back into the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time in three years, checking in at No. 25.

“I think it means more to the people that doubted us,” Corbin Kaufusi told reporters about the ranking. “That’s what is big for us. A lot of people have doubted us … and we’ve put a lot of that to rest.”
