Lows mixed with highs for '10 soccer

Daily Universe - Sunday, July 25th 2010 at 9:28pm

The Cougar men’s soccer team finished its season on a high with a win but is frustrated overall with its 4-10-2 record.  “Obviously, I am very disappointed with our record,” coach Chris Watkins said. “BYU and our administration don’t necessarily care about our record in this because it is not an even playing field. But we care, our coaches and our players care. We are disappointed to not have won more games for sure but we are very proud of the way we play.” Watkins said the team does not compete on an even playing field because the team is comprised of college players, but the team competes in a semi-professional league. He said the players do a lot of things well; they never give up and work hard every night. He feels the team deserved some better results.     “Sometimes we are not good enough,” Watkins said. “Sometimes we’ve been unlucky, and sometimes our opponents have just killed us, but we fought every time.” Players and coaches said some team highlights for the Cougar men’s team were tying the Under-21 Mexican National team on BYU’s home field with a score of 2-2, tying with last year’s Premier Development League champions, the Ventura Fusion, at the beginning of the season with a score of 0-0 and beating its league rival, the Ogden Outlaws twice with scores of 3-1 in both games. “[The] highlight of the season was the sold out game versus Mexico’s U21 [national team],” defender Tyler Christiansen said. “It was my first game of the start of the season and also a great achievement for the team.” Along with beating Ogden twice this season, the Cougars also beat the Southern California Seahorses twice, 2-0 and 2-1. The Cougar team (4-10-2) finished the year in eighth place (out of nine teams).   “My favorite victory of the year was the last game,” forward Toni Niccoli said. “It was so satisfying to finish the season with a win. We had a rough season, but we deserved to go out like that. We worked hard and had fun doing it. We became close not only as teammates on the field but more importantly as friends off the field.” He said the team is excited to begin training for next year and is even more anxious to win more games. The Cougars are looking forward to the return of strong players from their missions. The team will also be helped with the return of key starters from this year, like Niccoli, who earned the “Golden Boot” for scoring the most goals this season. Other returning starters include Brady Marshall, who is known for his speed and scoring potential, and goalkeeper Bryan Black, who had several key saves this season. The team joined the PDL in 2003 after winning seven club national championships. It is the first and only university to own a franchise in the league. Featuring 68 teams in four conferences along the US and Canada, the PDL is the top Under-23 men’s soccer league in North America. The PDL provides elite collegiate soccer players the opportunity to compete at a higher level while maintaining their eligibility, according to a BYU men’s soccer team news release. Each team plays 16 matches, eight at home and eight away, during the regular PDL season.
