The Cougar men’s soccer team will play its last two games of the season against the Fresno Fuego and Ogden Outlaws tonight and Saturday.
“We are excited about this weekend [and] really want to end on a good note,” said BYU forward Brady Marshall. “These are two teams we are very capable of beating.”
The Cougars lost to the Fuego 1-0 a few weeks ago when they traveled to California. The Fuego scored on a late second-half penalty kick. The team fought through the game with many near-goal opportunities, defender James Bindrup said.
The Cougars will play the Fuego at home tonight at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on BYUTV.
The Cougars will travel to Ogden Saturday for a 5 p.m. game against in-state rivals, the Outlaws.
The Cougars beat the Outlaws 3-1 during an Independence Day home game.
The Cougars (3-9-2) are in eighth (of nine) in league standings. and have 11 points. The Fuego (6-4-3) are in fourth with 21 points. The Outlaws (2-8-2) are last with 8 points.
“[We] feel like we can go out on a high note with two wins,” defender Tyler Christiansen said. “[We] also really want to send out our seniors the way they deserve to finish their careers.”
These will be the last two BYU career games for seniors Bryan Black, Brent Jensen, Britton Osborne, KC Whitman and Drew Van Wagenen.
These seniors are the defensive backbone of the Cougars. Black is the starting goalkeeper. Whitman and Van Wagenen work together to defend the goal while Brent Jensen and Osborne distribute and move the ball between the defense and forwards.
Osborne has also scored three of the 12 Cougar goals this season.
“We want to go out with two wins,” BYU’s Toni Niccoli said. “It is sad that our season has come to an end but everyone is positive and we know how hard we have to work in the off season so that we are ready for next year.”
