BYU's head coach Dave Rose has not lost three games in a row in the Marriot Center during his entire tenure. That streak was not broken on Thursday when the Cougars were able to get by Gonzaga 83-73. BYU was able to overcome their 5th consecutive sub-30% shooting night.

Great win for BYU. Saint Mary’s may be leading the league but Gonzaga is still the most nationally-recognizable team in the WCC. BYU balanced poor outside shooting with terrific defense, holding Gonzaga to their lowest offensive efficiency (points per possession) of the season in the process.

With just 26.5 seconds left in a tied game, Senior Brock Zylstra calmly squared his shoulders and delivered a long-range bomb that gave BYU (18-5) a narrow advantage in a hotly contested battle.
Never mind that BYU was playing hostile ACC territory where in its entire school history the Cougars have never tasted success. Forget that coming in to the game Virginia Tech was the No. 1 3-point defense in the country. Disregard that BYU’s former 3-point shooting prowess had completely abandoned it over the past three games, where 40% shooting club has gone just 9-for-60. And ignore that Zylstra was in the throes of his own horrible shooting streak.

In Thursday's loss to LMU, BYU shot just 8% from three. That goes down as the Cougar's worst three-point shooting performance since February 7, 2004 against UNLV where BYU shot 1-15 from three (6.7%).

Brock Zylstra gave us a performance for the ages Saturday. To say he was “feeling it” would be a gross understatement. Which got me thinking: Which of this year’s Cougar Hoopsters aren’t shooting enough? And which are shooting too much?

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is classic tale of three gunslingers who set out to find a pile of gold. It’s also a good summary of what awaits BYU as it gets into the heart of West Coast Conference play.
